And for good reason.I am extremely glad that so many people have read this book because Thomas has spent his life learning about and living the soul – he is a true and expert guide to the soul. Yes, the interior life, the inner life, longs for expression, and Thomas guides us in this expression. Without expressing things of depth, life is arid and without meaning. In my paper, “Suicide and the Soul”, I ask the question, “What is the language of the Soul?” As an answer, I use this passage from Care of the Soul: “The Roman writer Apuleius said ‘Everyone should know that you can\’t live in any other way than by cultivating the soul,’ yet the great malady of the twentieth century, implicated in all our troubles and affecting us individually and socially is ‘loss of soul.’” Care of the Soul is an antidote to that loss of soul, as are all of Thomas’s books.
